These shrimp require minimal maintenance and live up to 20 years. Opae ula, also known as Hawaiian red shrimp or volcanic shrimp, are a species of shrimp that are native to Hawaii Known for their bright red color, their color can go from white, pink, and all shades of red and are fascinating to watch. They thrive in both brackish and saltwater environments. They are very resilient, can live for decades, and are often kept as low-maintenance pets in closed ecosystems. Opae ula are slow-growing, algae-eating creatures, making them perfect for self-sustaining aquariums. Caring for Opa ula shrimp is relatively easy:

Use brackish water (specific gravity of about 1.010 to 1.012).

Temperature: Keep the water between 68°F and 82°F (20°C to 28°C). They are quite tolerant of temperature changes but do well at room temperature.

Lighting: No special lighting is needed. Moderate to low light is enough since they live in dimly lit environments.

Feeding: These shrimp are low-maintenance eaters and can survive by feeding on algae and biofilm in the tank. - You can supplement their diet with algae pellets or fish food once every 1-2 weeks. Be careful not to overfeed, as they produce very little waste and uneaten food can spoil the water quality.

Water Maintenance - Minimal water changes are needed—perhaps 10% every few months, or when the water becomes cloudy. - If you're using a sealed or enclosed ecosystem, water changes may not be necessary at all, as they can live in a self-sustaining environment.

Breeding - Opae ula can breed easily in captivity. Once they are comfortable in their environment, they will produce small larvae. No special intervention is needed as long as the water conditions are stable.

Lifespan - These shrimp can live for over 10 years, with some reports suggesting they may live up to 20 years in ideal conditions. By following these guidelines, you can keep your opae ula happy and healthy for a long time.
